Restaurant Review: Umi Sake in Cockeysville, Maryland

While in the Hunt Valley/Cockeysville area for a convention this weekend, I found myself craving some fresh and healthy sushi as a break from the typical heavy/fast food con fare. Umi Sake was located close to my hotel and seemed to get good reviews, so I decided to give it a try. Overall, I can’t say I was impressed enough to definitely want to return again when next in the area (which is at least once or twice a year for cons and other events).

At Long Last, Sagami

It’s long been a sad but true fact – or at least, a statement taken as fact by many of Philadelphia’s top foodies – that the best sushi in all of Philly is actually found in South Jersey. The battle for top sushi destination generally is fought between Matt Ito’s Fuji in Haddonfield and Shigeru Fukuyoshi’s Sagami in Collingswood. Good first impression at Machi Sushi!

Spider Roll at Machi Sushi

Last summer I reported on my dismal experience at Yamaki Sushi in Philadelphia, on 20th Street off Rittenhouse Square. So I wasn’t suprised earlier this year when I saw they were “closed for a re-opening in February.” What I wasn’t sure of was whether the sushi bar was just getting a facelift, or whether new operators/owners were involved in making for a better sushi experience.

Yamaki Sushi’s No-Good Maki

I promise to get back to my Italy trip report and reviews soon, but I had to take a break to do a quick write-up on Yamaki Sushi Bar, recently-opened on 20th Street just off Rittenhouse Square. I still mourn the closing of Sushi on the Square, a great little sushi bar that used to be where Yogorino now resides in that same area. Could Yamaki be a good substitute when I need a quick lunchtime sushi fix? Based on my one experience there, the answer is sadly no.
