Tasty Eats in Middletown, New York: Seriously Tasty Asian Food!

Probably no one was more surprised than I could be when my mother recently called to extol the praises of a new Chinese restaurant in Middletown, New York. The area isn’t exactly known for its Asian cuisine, at least not of a more authentic and non-Americanized take-out variety. (Middletown regretfully could not even support the one Asian supermarket which tried to operate there several years ago, Great Tang.) But as they are located right across the street from her regular veterinary clinic, we made plans to visit together the next time I was in the area for a visit, and boy if I wasn’t wonderfully surprised by the delicious meal we enjoyed together! Tasty Eats is serving the kind of authentic, home-cooked Chinese food you won’t find at most restaurants in the area…or most areas beyond big city Chinatowns on the East Coast. I heartily recommend giving them a try if you ever find yourself in the area and want to explore some wonderful tastes and delicacies.

Back to the “Bull on the Barn” Bayshore Crab House in Newport, NJ

Two summers ago, the sweetie and I checked out the Bay Shore Crab House (known at the time as the “Bull on the Barn” because of its easy-to-spot outdoor mural) for the first time. (Here’s my review of that visit.) We enjoyed a tasty, if early season, selection of Jersey crabs and swore we would return again soon.

Costanera Cocina Peruana in Montclair, New Jersey

Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the sweetie and I took a day trip up to Montclair, New Jersey to visit the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens. The Gardens have been on my “must see” list for several years and we were fortunate to have the time off to catch them during peak bloom time this year.  It was well worth the trip!

Masseria Dei Vini: Exceptional Authentic Italian in New York City

Let’s get straight to the point: Masseria Dei Vini is serving some of the finest Italian food I’ve enjoyed in any restaurant outside of Italy. Certainly it’s some of the finest I’ve had in New York City in recent years, and that’s saying a lot considering how many Italian restaurants there are throughout the city. But the food at Masseria Dei Vini is so exceptional, sweetie and I went not just once but twice during our recent four-day vacation trip. We couldn’t stay away, there were too many things on the menu we wanted to try, and we simply couldn’t imagine having a better meal elsewhere.

Cafe Storico at the New York Historical Society

This past week I spent four wonderful days in New York City, checking out various art exhibits, performances, and of course sampling the wonderful food in this amazing dining destination. One of the highlights of the trip was definitely a visit to the New York Historical Society to see the final part of their incredible, three year exhibit of John James Audubon‘s original watercolor paintings for the Birds of America, “Audubon’s Aviary”. I’ve been fortunate enough to see all three parts of the exhibit now, and also fortunate each visit to enjoy a wonderful lunch at the Historical Society’s terrific restaurant, Cafe Storico.
