Sapori Trattoria BYOB in Collingswood, NJ

Every year for my birthday I like to visit a restaurant that’s been on my “must try” list for ages. This year, that restaurant was Sapori Trattoria in Collingswood. As skeptical as I am about most New Jersey Italian restaurants being “authentic” Italian (and not Italian-American), the menu at Sapori intrigued me by promising some original offerings far beyond the typical Marsala, Piccatta and Parm that typically dominate in these parts. Head Chef Franco Lombardo hails originally from Palermo and worked for some years at the popular and well-respected La Locanda Del Ghiottone in Philadelphia before opening Sapori. All in all, it sounded promising, and overall, I was pleased (if not “blown away”) with our experience.

Bull on the Barn Bayshore Crab House in Newport NJ

A few weeks ago the sweetie and I took a Sunday drive down to Fortescue and the surrounding area, wanting to see how the area was (or wasn’t) recovering from Hurricane Sandy. Another excellent meal at Tavro 13 in Swedesboro, New Jersey

This past week the sweetie and I had the chance to dine at Tavro 13 again, which I had enjoyed tremendously on our first visit there just a few weeks back. Once again everything was outstanding and it was wonderful to be able to try some more dishes on the menu, especially as we had a guest with us as well so we could really sample a lot of things.

Tavro 13 is a welcome addition to South Jersey’s dining scene

When I moved from Philadelphia to the Swedesboro area in 2010, one thing I knew I was giving up was a vibrant, local restaurant scene as one can only expect to find in a large urban city. Granted I scored a huge dream kitchen for myself as part of the deal, so I wasn’t about to complain very much. Still, one of the definite drawbacks of living in a rural part of New Jersey is that local dining options are largely limited to old fashioned diners, Chinese/Japanese “fusion” spots, red gravy Italian, sports bars and national chains.

Crabby’s in Mays Landing, New Jersey

Crabby'sThe other weekend, the sweetie had a hunger for some crabs and suggested we head on out to Crabby’s in Mays Landing. He’d been there before, I never had but was up for giving it a try. He warned repeatedly that it was definitely a bit of a “dive” but when it comes to crab joints, what do you expect?
