I’ve finally begun exploring and shopping at the Asian supermarkets in the Cherry Hill area, which is great as I can stock up on noodles, sauces, and vegetables that I can’t get normally like mustard greens, daikon, Vietnamese herbs and other assorted good stuff. While shopping at Asian Food Market, I noticed Pho Barclay in the same shopping plaza. I was hungry and it was lunchtime, so why not? I’ve been missing my Vietnamese food fix since moving out of Philadelphia, where I was a huge fan of Vietnam Palace – especially their insanely good Vermicelli Noodle plates.
Pho Barclay has a pretty extensive – and reasonably priced menu – with all of your basics covered like Pho, Vermicelli, Pad Thai, Rice plates and Summer Rolls. The atmosphere is pretty simple, but it’s clean and bright, and seems to attract a lot of lunchtime traffic from the area. I went for the Vermicelli with Grilled Pork and Spring Roll ($7.25) which came out looking not quite like their website photo but still pretty darn good. The spring roll was crispy and not too greasy, the pork nicely charred and flavorful, the salad greens all tasty and fresh. For the price it was an incredibly filling meal, although it still didn’t measure up to my beloved Vermicelli Combo at Vietnam Palace with charbroiled chicken, shrimp, meatballs, stuffed grape leaves, crispy spring roll. That dish is still perhaps what I’d request as a Last Meal, so it’s going to be hard for anywhere else to compete.
Still, for less than $10 it was a darn fine meal and I’ll be back to try some other dishes out next time I’m in the Barclay Shopping Plaza.
