Heritage Vineyards was recently named New Jersey’s “Winery of the Year” by the Garden State Wine Growers Association, and after visiting them it is easy to see why. This family-owned and operated winery has over 40 acres of vineyards, planted in Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Grenache & Sauvignon Blanc. With so many wine grapes grown on the premises, it is no wonder they produce so many award-winning wines (blended and single variety) here.
The spacious tasting room is a wonderful place to spend an hour or two enjoying one of their wines by the glass, or a sampling of 5 different wines. Between my partner and I we sampled 10 different wines on this visit, my selections running more to the dry red wines and his to the sweeter whites and roses. I particularly enjoyed their Cabernet Franc and Chambourcin, along with the outstanding Painted Horse Cuvee. They also produce several nice fruit wines including peach, apple and blueberry. While at the tasting room, you can enjoy some light bites and shop their selection of specialty cheeses and wine-related arts and crafts. In the summer months, the outdoor farm market is a great place to buy some produce to take home for dinner – they even sell starter vines if you’d like to try growing your own grapes!
Heritage frequently hosts tasting events, dinners and entertainment, and is also available for the booking of private events. Tours of the winery and vineyards are available on Saturday afternoons as well. I give Heritage Vineyards one of my strongest recommendations of all of the New Jersey wineries I’ve visited to date.
